CKR Law’s San Diego Office to Support Entrepreneurs through Partnership with UCSD

CKR Law LLP is thrilled to be among the startup experts sponsoring "Ignite," University of California San Diego's flagship innovation and entrepreneurship conference in partnership with UCSD's Office of Innovation and Commercialization.

This third annual event connects campus and community for two days of entrepreneurial learning and networking; "celebrates early-stage ideas and fast-paced elevator pitches;" and will be held on February 20-21, 2019. It will bring together students, alumni, faculty, and staff from UCSD and regional universities, entrepreneurs, investors, mentors and anyone interested in San Diego's entrepreneurship culture.

CKR committed to providing pro bono legal services and financial resources to UCSD in each of the next two years (2019 and 2020) to support the growth and evolution of university-related businesses. CKR will start by awarding the winner of "Pitch@Ignite," Ignite's advanced pitch competition among national university teams, with $10,000 in legal work and $5,000 in cash.

Over the past two years, Ignite has brought together more than 2,800 innovative and entrepreneurial minds from 8 states and 10 countries. To date, more than $58,000 in cash prizes have been awarded and more than $1,500,000+ in-kind services have been given to competitors and all attendees.

CKR is excited to be part of this endeavor. San Diego partner Ross Epstein is leading the firm's collaboration with UCSD. He, together with CKR Partner Aman Badyal, will be presenting at Ignite on: "Leveraging Uncle Sam: Government Incentives for Startups."

Mr. Epstein brings a unique entrepreneurial perspective to his role as a legal advisor to a wide array of clients, including U.S., European and Asian multinational corporations; universities and other research institutions; small businesses and start-up companies and sole inventors and entrepreneurs primarily in high-tech and life sciences. He is a startup founder himself, having created a telecommunications/ internet business, BCH Communications, and grown it into a multi-million dollar enterprise. He also served as in-house counsel for BCH.

"I relate closely to the entrepreneurial client due to my hands-on experiences in business," Mr. Epstein notes. "And I understand the daily and strategic challenges that entrepreneurs face. At CKR, we are very excited to be encouraging these innovators at UCSD and helping to transform university-based initiatives into commercially-viable entities."

UCSD's efforts are part of a broader trend of increasing collaboration between academia and the private sector, which leads to a rise in entrepreneurial success and economic impact.

Mr. Badyal adds that "startup advising is important to CKR and one of our strengths." He specializes in tax law and has represented a range of clients from early-stage companies to global conglomerates, which enables him to follow emerging companies along every stage of their potential growth.

San Diego partners Merle Richman and James Snyder are also participating in Ignite, and offer complementary practices in the startup space. Mr. Snyder will be speaking on the topic: "The Magic of Mergers & Acquisitions: How Do They Really Happen?" He has a broad high-tech business transactions practice, with years of experience in law firms and as in-house General Counsel in San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley. His clients span many industries, from connected car and IoT connectivity leaders and life sciences and healthcare chatbot pioneers to supply chain and financial services SaaS network providers.

Mr. Richman is an IP lawyer. He has extensive experience in preparing and prosecuting domestic and foreign patents and trademarks, conducting patent and trademark infringement reviews, and providing litigation support for intellectual property related legal actions. He also drafts consultant, employee agreements, and licensing agreements and manages corporate intellectual property portfolios.

As a whole, CKR currently has ten lawyers based in San Diego, most of whom specialize in corporate transactional work (frequently with a tech focus), including IP protection and licensing, and are ready to be of support to UCSD and the entrepreneurial community.
