CKR Law LLP is pleased to announce the recent significant expansion of its San Francisco office. Partners Jason Balogh, Brad Bertoglio, Anthony J. Caldwell, Elizabeth Chien-Hale, Leslie Katz, Victor M. Marquez, and Ning Zhang have all joined the firm to expand the firm's presence in San Francisco and immediately enhance and extend the firm's ability to provide the highest level of service to its clients.
Jason Balogh brings over a decade of litigation, trial, and appellate experience successfully representing clients in complex, multi-party litigation with liability exposure in the hundreds of millions. At CKR, he focuses on litigation in the areas of professional liability (including the defense of real estate brokers, HOA managers, insurance brokers, attorneys, engineers, and architects), employment, construction defect, and insurance defense. Mr. Balogh also has experience as an outside general counsel to both large and small companies.
Brad Bertoglio helps technology and IP-focused companies procure, license and enforce high-quality intellectual property rights. With deep technology expertise in software, electronics, medical devices, and consumer products, Mr. Bertoglio has developed and monetized worldwide patent portfolios for companies ranging from early-stage startups to global corporations. He also assists companies in a wide variety of trademark and brand-protection efforts. Mr. Bertoglio has built a unique understanding of startups and emerging companies by serving in a variety of startup roles, both legal and business; he has also co-founded, built and sold a startup of his own.
Anthony J. Caldwell has almost 20 years' experience advising clients regarding securities and regulatory compliance, complex commercial transactions, secured and unsecured debt financings, and general corporate matters. He focuses on representing investment advisors and managers of private investment funds, including domestic and offshore hedge funds, private equity funds, real estate investment funds, and other alternative investment funds.
Elizabeth Chien-Hale specializes in international patent and other forms of cross-border intellectual property protection. She has both in-house and law firm experience, having previously worked for several Silicon Valley and international law firms, including general practice firms and IP boutiques. In her prior in-house capacity, she worked in China on a number of occasions, including as the Director of Intellectual Property Legal Affairs for the Asia Pacific Region at a multinational power management company and as the interim CEO for Taiwan's IP Bank project under the Industrial Technology Research Institute ("ITRI"). She has also served in the US as Apple Inc.'s Senior Counsel/China Coordinator for all IPR issues in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. On the pro-bono side, Ms. Chien-Hale founded the Institute for Intellectual Property in Asia, an organization through which she conducts talks and events facilitating exchanges between the United States and Asia. In addition, she has lectured and written, in both English and Chinese, on the topics of international intellectual property protection and the Chinese constitutional structure.
Leslie Katz focuses her practice on a variety of areas, including government law and policy, energy, communications, healthcare, clean technology, land use, construction, information technology, infrastructure, development, and public-private partnerships. She is also active on advising companies in the blockchain and cryptocurrency sectors. Overall, she helps her clients reach their goals by creating links that optimize the political, legal, community, and business context in which they operate.
Victor M. Marquez advises on real estate transactions, land use and zoning laws, general commercial litigation, state and local government relations, and community outreach in the context of land development and redevelopment for both private companies and non-profit organizations and programs. He has extensive experience working before administrative, legislative, and executive bodies throughout California, including before the Planning Departments, City Councils and Board of Supervisors, as well as in the State Capitol of California. He is a registered lobbyist and an expert in community outreach aimed at gaining governmental and community support for his clients' real estate and development projects. He has worked with municipalities across California representing the interests of Class A Real Estate Developers. He works with real estate clients on site identification and acquisition, due diligence, environmental phase I and phase II studies, map studies, analysis of zoning and land use laws, and on the planning entitlement process. He also has expertise in defending project appeals and negotiating settlement agreements on entitlements, including CEQA appeals, before legislative bodies and State Courts. Mr. Marquez is a former National President of the Hispanic National Bar Association, past President and General Counsel of San Francisco La Raza Lawyer Association, and past Chairman of the San Francisco Mexican Museum.
Ning Zhang has extensive experience representing U.S. companies in their Chinese investments and Chinese companies in overseas mergers and acquisitions. Ms. Zhang specializes in mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic alliances and greenfield start-ups for manufacturers, healthcare providers, financial institutions and high-tech companies.
